Computer-Vision-Assisted Wound Documentation Tool for a Wound Care Clinic

Overview

Built a computer-vision tool for a wound care clinic that measures wound size and tracks visual healing progress from photos taken at each visit, standardizing what had previously been an inconsistent manual measurement process. The tool overlays a reference scale on each photo to calculate approximate dimensions and stores a visual timeline per patient so clinicians can see healing trends across visits at a glance. This addressed a real clinical documentation challenge: manual measurements varied between staff members, making it hard to objectively track whether a treatment plan was working. All measurements remain clearly marked as clinician-reviewable estimates rather than a diagnostic replacement. We worked with clinical staff to agree on a standard photo-taking approach before building the measurement logic, since consistent input mattered as much as the computer-vision model itself. The tool was validated against a set of manually-measured wounds to confirm its estimates lined up with clinician judgment before rolling out clinic-wide. Wound-progress documentation is now standardized across every provider instead of varying by who took the measurement, making it easier to objectively track healing trends and justify treatment plan changes to insurers.
